It’s week 4 of my solo dates! This time I joined a silent reading session with Kuala Lumpur Reads at Lake Gardens 📚🌳 No talking, just fresh air, books, and beautiful trees — perfect for introverts. I turned it into a mini picnic with pastries, coffee, and fruits. Reading under trees with like-minded strangers was surprisingly magical. Jazz Alley I think about public spaces and consumerism a lot. After living in Taiwan, where third spaces are plenty, coming home to Malaysia as an adult was a shock. It’s almost impossible to step out without spending money. For that reason, Jalan Negara Kita has long been on my ‘to-visit’ list. Once a dark, avoided alley, it got a complete facelift a few years ago when nearby businesses and the community came together to clean it up and make it home for local gatherings- exhibitions, cultural programmes, open mics, and more. The one that fascinated me most was Jazz Alley (what a romantic name!). Happening every third Sunday of the month, it is when musician friends of Jalan Negara Kita come to jam, and people gather for a night of live music. It reminds me a little of wayang pacak, that same sense of openness and shared experience. I’ve always found jazz to have the magical quality of transforming a space, so it felt especially fitting that it was being played in a once-abandoned alley now thriving with life and generosity. By chance, I struck up a conversation with Nazura, one of the key drivers behind the initiative. We talked about how we have too many malls and too few co-owned spaces. I told her how I feel individualism makes us poor, but community makes us rich. I am richer because these musicians came to share their music, and people like Naz did the work to create a space like this. I’d put off visiting Jalan Negara Kita for so long because it’s far and unfamiliar. In my head it felt a little unsafe to venture into a strange place alone late at night. But it was so worth it. This is Solo Date Episode 26, which means I’m officially at the halfway point of my 2025 challenge to make 52 solo date videos. How wild is that? This video is a little overdue but few months back, I joined a small art therapy session at Sepi Studio, and it was completely free. Collaging is one of my favourite mediums because it feels less intimidating than drawing or painting. I liked that we weren’t just making random art, that we were making something that represented who we are. And through that we got to know each other a little better. I didn’t expect the session to take place at the beautiful Sekeping Tenggiri, and I definitely didn’t expect such cute (and yummy) refreshments at the end. The session was free because it was funded. But as always, when things are free, people tend to value them less. It was meant for more than three people, but many who signed up didn’t show up, while there was a whole waitlist of people who would’ve loved to be there. I didn’t include this part in the video, but I loved the session so much that I went home and made a whole new collage using the same prompts and even framed it. (It was my first time framing something I made). I wanted it to be a reminder of who I am and the life I’m trying to build. @breeeyani This is probably my most ambitious solo date to date. Back story, it’s been 6 months since I left my corporate job. In the last 180 days, I’ve been working from my dining table and it has given me back pain that I can’t solve even as someone in fitness. When The Wood Place asked if I would like to try woodworking, I thought to myself: The only thing I really want is a work desk. I thought the chances of making one were slim, so imagine my surprise when they said “sure, what desk would you like to make.” 🤯 This 90sec video you see is actually filmed across 4 days- 3 days of building plus an extra day to transport the desk back to my home, cleaning my extra room for it and finally assembling the pieces. Carpentry is hard guys. You need to be precise. And careful. There’s a lot of physical labour. You constantly have wood dust all over your body. And being the beginner that I am, I was very tense so it made me even more tired. Day 1 was the worst. But I am happy to report that I got more relaxed and in the zone with each subsequent day. By day 3 I was even a bit sad that it was all coming to an end. I wasn’t joking when I said I cried when my desk was finished. I felt so proud. It’s funny that as humans we want things to be effortless, but it’s effort that brings us connection, mastery, joy, and so much more. Would I recommend this solo date? I would. As a girl, it felt really empowering to learn how to use power tools. As a creative person who works with concepts and ideas, it felt really rewarding to make something tangible that I could use every day. There are a few ways to work with The Wood Place, you can get them to make you custom furniture, or get them to teach you how to make your custom furniture (like what I did), or sign up for their group classes where everybody does the same project, but individually. @breeeyani I’ve never really been a Merdeka-celebration kind of girl, but since I was on a solo date adventure this year, I decided to bring myself out and I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had. What made it different was that I didn’t just see heritage behind glass. I got to live it, through food, performance, music, and fashion; all at The Living History Project (TLHP)’s Impact Festival, running now until September 20th. The organisers gifted me tickets to their launch, where I wore my favourite baju, browsed the Malaya Market, ate dishes inspired by our national archives, and watched an immersive open-air musical at Badan Warisan Malaysia (BWM). With the KLCC glowing in the backdrop, it felt truly magical. And while Merdeka has passed, Malaysia Day is just around the corner 🌺 On September 20, TLHP will return to BWM with another Malaya Market, plus Mak Yong, Chinese Opera, joget, and even DJ sessions (wear your baju, girlies!). @breeeyani I’ve always been curious about vinyl, but it felt like such a big commitment — the gear, the speakers, the endless records I knew I’d want to collect. So imagine my joy when I found out there’s a café where you can play and listen to records without having to own any of it? It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this engaged in listening. But in the 2.5 hours I spent at Eternyl, I didn’t scroll, didn’t read, didn’t work, I just listened to music? I took in the album art, flipped through the liner notes, and intentionally picked out what I wanted to hear next. And it reminded me of my teenage years being engrossed in the CDs I own. It’s the exact opposite of streaming (which, let’s be honest, has become background noise for most of us). I didn’t expect active listening to feel so nourishing, so I was so surprised when I walked out feeling fresh, energised, and full. Like my cup had been filled. Honestly, this would make such a beautiful date. Not just solo, but with a partner or a group of friends, where you really listen to something together without distraction. @breeeyani I’ve been pretty stressed lately with book writing and creating my first newsletter, so it was such a treat to spend a slow afternoon at Itchy Hands Studio, making ceramic charms and quietly chatting with new friends. There was so much to love: Aisyah’s cosy studio, sunlight pouring in as we shaped and painted clay, playing with the studio cats, meeting other girls who carried the same calm energy, and the free flow of meaningful conversation. I’ve seen these ceramic charm workshops before but never felt called to join. That is until lately, when I’ve been craving something slower and more nourishing to deal with all that stress I have around work. Also, I am so glad I took some time to journal beforehand, thinking about what charm I wanted to make that could reflect my current life stage and where I’d like to head next. @breeeyani I often get asked if I actually enjoy the solo dates I go on, or if it’s all just a performance for the internet. The truth is, I do genuinely love all the dates I go on. But I usually only film and post the ones I think others might enjoy too. This video is the exception. Somehow I felt the need to spend 12 hours making it, even though I wasn’t sure how it would be received. Two weeks ago, I went to a Tatreez workshop. Tatreez is a traditional form of embroidery practiced by Palestinian women. The class was led by Jood, a Palestinian herself. Besides learning the stitches by hand, I also got to understand its cultural meaning—what it represents for Palestinians today, especially in the context of everything happening now. As someone who studied anthropology, I’ve always believed stories and culture are powerful ways to connect with people outside your own world. It’s hard to turn away from someone’s pain once they stop being a faceless group, and start becoming people with childhoods, families, favourite foods, and beloved clothes. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know much about Palestinians before this. Maybe because I’m Malaysian Chinese, and I don’t have a natural entry point through shared religion or language. But I learned so much that day. I took notes on what I didn’t understand, and looked it up after. Now I get why Jood said she’s a Palestinian who grew up in Jordan. And why she added, “but I’m very Palestinian.” Jood kept the session serious but light. And in the same way, I hope this video carries that same spirit. I’m not claiming to speak on behalf of anyone. But I do believe culture matters. It keeps people rooted and tells their story. Hoping that this video of the Tatreez becomes an entry point for someone else too, like how it was for me. @breeeyani Trying to catch up on editing my solo date videos! Here’s week 19. I’ve wanted to try woodblock printing ever since I saw an exhibition by the amazing Pangrok Sulap. So when I stumbled across a Woodblock Printing experience one day, it was an immediate yes for me. After this solo date, I can confidently say: I love woodblock printing 🥹 I really do, and here’s why. 1. As someone who’s terrified of drawing, like, terrified (I just can’t with the blank-page), this medium takes the pressure off. Most of the work is in the carving, and with stencilling available, the process feels way more approachable. 2. One block = infinite prints. It’s perfect for making templates, and I love templates. I actually made one to stamp into my journal after every solo date. 3. The carving process might take a lot of patience, but it is also very meditative. I also love that the print has a raw, handmade feel to it. The textures and carve lines give it so much personality. The day I went happened to be one of Lili’s first few workshops, so most of the participants were her friends. Normally that would scare me, crashing a friend group? Noooooo. But it turned out to be a very nice experience because everyone was so warm, and Lili’s playlist was so good that I ended up singing along with her friend Sarah… who is now my friend too. @breeeyani 🀄️ Ever tried a mahjong painting workshop? A few weeks ago, I joined one at Fab Cafe and it was a unique experience. I’ve played mahjong my whole life, but I’d never really thought about how the tiles were made. So it was lovely to learn how they’re traditionally drilled and then try painting them myself. The workshop was relaxing, not too hard, and as always, I made new friends along the way. We each painted seven tiles btw. Some with classic designs, others with Malaysian-inspired motifs created by Karen Aruba, a Hong Kong illustrator who comes from a family of mahjong crafters. What surprised me most was Fab Cafe itself. KL and PJ are full of these workshop spaces now, but I’ve never seen anyone else offer mahjong painting, kaleidoscope building, or textured art? @breeeyani A list of things to do in Penang that have nothing to do with food. It took me a long time to acknowledge this to myself, that although I enjoy a good plate of ckt and a hot bowl of laksa, I’m definitely not a foodie! (Feels weird to say this as a Malaysian). I eat to live, and not live to eat. Which is why, every time I visit Penang, although I get tons of food recommendations, the real question in my mind is- what do I actually do in between all the eating? Haha. I want to do something, but I don’t want the usual “walk around heritage sites” kind of itinerary. So before this trip, I asked my 7k followers what they would recommend. @breeeyani I’ve been feeling a little all over the place lately, so for this week’s solo date, I was craving something slower. Which led me to finally visit a spot that’s been on my list for ages — 雜活店 (“Za Huo Dian”), a quiet private kitchen tucked inside a home in Taman Supreme, KL. It was everything I needed. Fresh air, plants, sunlight, space to journal. Comforting food and quirky corners that sparked a quiet kind of playfulness. “Za Huo Dian” means “a shop of different things.” Their Facebook page is filled with photos of food pop-ups, talks, and workshops. It made me think: don’t we all wish there was a place like this in our own neighbourhood? A community space for people to slow down, eat, gather, and exchange ideas. Za Huo Dian is fairly well known in the Chinese-speaking community, but maybe less so outside of it. @breeeyani We’re at Solo Date 20! 🥳 A few weeks ago, I visited Harta Space-part museum, part gallery, and part café. I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but it’s now one of my favourite discoveries. You know how some museums can be dry, galleries soulless, and café-art spaces just feel… meh? Harta pulls off all three beautifully and more people need to know about it. The museum section houses an incredible private collection of centuries-old Peranakan jewellery. The layout is designed head to toe (literally). You start with hairpins and earrings, move through necklaces, brooches, bracelets, rings; and end with belts and anklets. The captions are simple, story-based, and genuinely enjoyable to read (unlike some museums where I just can’t brain the writing 😭). Next door, their gallery rotates monthly exhibitions. When I visited, they were showing works by Bayu. I didn’t catch the event, but they hosted a music-dance-art crossover performance. Multisensory and very cool. I had low expectations for the cafe (as with most gallery F&B), but the coconut melaka matcha was so good I’m still thinking about it now. I also like the comfy lounge where you can chill, maybe read or journal too. I did a little Harta background check when I got home: 4.9 stars on Google, privately owned by Habib, and still — free entry. That’s wild. These are the kinds of cultural experiences we often pay for overseas. It’s nice to see businesses here preserving art and heritage in ways that feel fresh, inspiring, and accessible. @breeeyani I’ve always known @BEAN BROTHERS 🇲🇾 for their coffee and for being one of the OG brands that helped shape cafe culture in KL. So imagine my surprise last weekend when I found out that not only is their food menu extensive, it’s actually really good too. I was expecting a regular coffee and reading session but ended up wiping the plate clean on every single dish. 😬 Also, their outlet at The Linc is so nice. Natural light, a big courtyard tree, and an open layout that makes it feel calm, airy and not too noisy. Perfect for reading, work or catching up with friends. @breeeyani I went stargazing for my latest solo date, and here are some notes I jotted down in my journal after: • As I looked up at the sky, I thought about a time in human history when there were no screens. How did people spend their nights? Maybe they read, crafted, or huddled with loved ones listening to music. Stargazing felt like one of those ancient ways of passing time. It is an old science, an old hobby, a deeply human ritual. Being there under the night sky made me feel connected to something timeless. • A big part of the date was waiting. Waiting without any guarantee that I’d actually see the thing I came for. All I could do was be patient and hope for the best. In today’s world of instant gratification, I think we’re losing that spirit of hope and patience. Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to stick with passion projects or ideas we believe in. Maybe the answer is just to look up at the sky more often. • I loved this date so much. May I always make time to sit down at night, sip tea, and look up, instead of looking down and scrolling my life away. @breeeyani During my recent trip to Penang, I got to stay at the sea-facing Angsana Teluk Bahang and it was a dream. Reading in bed, journaling on the balcony, hot baths, soft beds, late-night room service, waking up to an ocean view before going for the yummiest buffet breakfast…these are things I never cared about in my 20s but absolutely live for now 🥹 I also really liked the small touches like the drinks, dessert, and friendship bracelets they sent over to welcome us. I’ve been thrifting since my uni days (don’t ask how long ago that was), and while I love the vibe of most thrift stores—give me my beloved dungarees, corduroy, jackets, and tees—I often find the pieces a bit hard to wear on a daily basis. @breeeyani I read somewhere that people don’t really celebrate birthdays, new years, or festive anymore. That people sense no reason nor motivation to dress up, feast, buy flowers, or make it an occasion. So it felt really nice to join @thebloomsocietybyhajar last weekend, where I got to wear my favourite dress, enjoy a 5-course meal, and share the evening with a room full of amazing women, just because. ✨ Hajar’s Bloom Society is an intimate gathering where no woman knew each other, but everyone came dressed in something they loved, ready for good food and new friends. There were flowers on the table, jazz in the background, and kombucha pairings by @sippy.drink that made the whole evening sparkly and cute. When I was younger, I used to look forward to dressing up, going out with my girlfriends, making the night fancy just cause I felt like it. Somewhere along the way, that got lost in adulthood. But it really doesn’t have to be. Nights like this remind me how much joy and freshness can come from simply deciding to make a moment special- dress up! Have flowers! Sip on fancy kombucha! @breeeyani I usually feel very sus about trending places because they tend to be overhyped and crowded, but I was pleasantly surprised when I visited @marbleemporium2.0 a few weeks ago. Despite the buzz, there weren’t many people and I genuinely enjoyed my time there. A lot of people online call it a café, but it’s really not. It’s a marble showroom with a small coffee bar. This becomes obvious when you try the drinks. They’re okay, but definitely not café-level. So if you’re going just for the coffee, you’ll probably be disappointed. My advice: go for the space instead. It’s only open to public on Sundays, and it’s honestly quite beautiful. The mist, the trees, the towering slabs of stone…I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much time admiring marble. Each piece felt like it had its own personality. Nature really is the best artist. Is it just me, or is KL/PJ getting cooler and cooler? Whether by accident or design, I love that this showroom invites people to experience what they sell and not just look at it. @breeeyani I was at BuMI Fest 2 weeks ago, a slow-paced wellness and art festival held inside the beautiful Tropical Spice Garden, where the forest meets the sea. I joined nature-based workshops like tempeh-making, plant dyeing, yoga with harp, and sound baths with tea. The whole experience was so wholesome and nourishing 🥹 nothing like the crowded events I’m used to in KL. @breeeyani I was gifted the Garmin Vivoactive 5 a few months ago, and it has helped me better understand and track what whole-body health actually looks like — something I first came across in The 4 Pillar Plan by Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. Tracking my sleep has been incredibly useful, but what surprised me was how the Vivoactive 5 also lets me track my water intake and even mindfulness sessions. I’m someone whose energy fluctuates a lot. Not just throughout the day, but from day to day. So one of my favourite features is Garmin’s Body Battery™. It uses heart rate variability, stress levels, and activity data to estimate your energy levels. Think of it like a fuel gauge for your body. What I love about it is that it helps me decide what kind of movement my body actually needs each day. And more importantly, it removes the guilt of thinking I have to push hard every day. Some days, it tells me I’m running low. And I’ll use that info as a cue to rest, recharge, and head to bed early. I think this is what a smart tracker should do: It shouldn’t stop at data, but help you make space for what your body actually needs. I built a small home office (can’t wait to show you!), and added a few comforting touches to my bedroom. @breeeyani This is how I get new clothes without buying anything. It’s called a clothes swap — you bring items you’ve outgrown and exchange them for things you actually want to wear. The swap is NOT 1-to-1 barter kind of swap. Everything goes into a shared space, and you can take whatever you like, as many as you need. Some seasons I take more, some seasons less. You can even bring pieces back next time if they no longer suit you, and swap it again! I’ve been doing this for a year, and it’s how I’ve had a new outfit for every solo date without buying anything new. It’s perfect for one-off events, trying new styles, or giving your clothes a second life with someone who’ll love them next.
